What Is Cannabis (Marijuana)?

Marijuana, derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, is a widely used psychoactive drug. Its main psychoactive component is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which affects brain function through cannabinoid receptors. CBD, a non-psychoactive compound, is also present in marijuana. The levels of THC and CBD vary depending on cultivation and processing. Marijuana is used medicinally for chronic pain treatment, chemotherapy-induced nausea, and multiple sclerosis-induced spasms. Recreational use is more prevalent among youths. While legalized recreationally in some countries, it is illegal or decriminalized in others.

How Is It Used?

  • Smoking – Dried cannabis buds are folded into joints or smoked in a bong or pipe.

  • Vaping – Vaporizers produce inhalable vapors by heating dried flower or cannabis oil.

  • Edibles – Cannabis-infused food and drink items like brownies, cookies, candies, and teas have longer effects but stronger effects.

  • Tinctures – Cannabis oil or alcohol extracts are held under the tongue for sublingual absorption.

  • Topicals: Cannabinoid-infused lotions, creams, and balms are applied for localized discomfort.

  • Dabbing – Inhaling vapors of highly concentrated cannabis extracts, offering strong THC dosages but higher risk of adverse effects.
